Ram ProMaster Steering Recall, Chrysler Recalls 265,512 Vans Over Power Steering Failure Risk (NHTSA 26V621)
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling about 265,512 Ram ProMaster vans because water can enter the electric power steering wiring harness and disable power steering assist. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number is 26V621 (also written 26V621000). Chrysler’s recall number is 92D. NHTSA says a loss of power steering assist can increase the risk of a crash.
If you own a 2022–2026 Ram ProMaster, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The repair is free, but the final remedy is not yet fully available, so read the “Is the repair available yet?” section below.

What Is the Electric Power Steering Defect in Recall 26V621?
The recall says water may enter the electric power steering wiring harness, which can disable power steering assist. When assist is lost, the driver has to use much more effort to turn the wheel. The van is not described as having a locked steering wheel, and the recall notice says nothing about steering failing completely. The concern is a sudden jump in steering effort, which matters most in:
- low-speed turns, parking and U-turns;
- tight loading areas; and
- emergency maneuvers on the road.
Drivers may get no warning before assist is lost, according to NHTSA as reported by Fox Business.
What Did NHTSA Investigate Before the Ram ProMaster Recall?
On March 2, 2026, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened Preliminary Evaluation PE26002, “Loss of Power Steering Assist,” covering an estimated 136,666 2022–2023 Ram ProMaster vans. It was prompted by a review of Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs).
NHTSA said it had received 19 VOQs alleging intermittent or complete failure of power steering assist in 2022–2023 ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles, and noted that some reports cited water intrusion into electrical connectors of the electric power steering control module. At the time, the agency recorded no crashes, fires, injuries or fatalities among those 19 reports.
The recall is broader than the investigation. It reaches model years through 2026 and adds the ProMaster 3500 Electric. An investigation is not a finding that every van is defective, and the recall is the manufacturer’s remedy for the vehicles it covers.

Have Ram ProMaster Steering Problems Caused Crashes or Injuries?
Stellantis told The Detroit News it is aware of one non-injury accident linked to the problem, according to Fox Business. Chrysler’s recall filing and NHTSA’s PE26002 opening document do not report injuries or fatalities.
How to Check Whether Your Ram ProMaster Is in NHTSA Recall 26V621
You do not have to wait for a letter. VINs for this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on October 6, 2026.
- Find your 17-character VIN on the lower-left corner of the windshield, your registration or your insurance card.
- Enter it at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- If an open recall appears, contact a Ram dealer and ask for NHTSA 26V621 / Chrysler 92D. You can also call Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403.
Is the Chrysler Ram ProMaster Recall Repair Available Yet?
Not fully. Chrysler says interim letters warning owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed November 17, 2026, and additional letters will follow once the final remedy is available. A VIN match today does not guarantee that a dealer can complete the repair right away. Call the dealer and ask about the status of recall 92D parts.
The remedy is an inspection and replacement of the wiring harness and the electronic power steering gear as necessary, so not every van will need both parts.
What Should Ram ProMaster Owners Do Until the Repair Is Available?
- Be aware that steering assist could be reduced or lost without clear warning.
- If steering suddenly becomes hard to turn, slow down smoothly, avoid abrupt inputs and pull over when it is safe.
- Contact a Ram dealer and give them your VIN and recall numbers 26V621 and 92D.
- Keep repair orders, diagnostic reports, photos of any warning messages and invoices.
- Report safety problems to NHTSA at nhtsa.gov or 1-888-327-4236.
Does Federal Law Require Chrysler to Fix the Ram ProMaster for Free?
Yes, within the limits of the statute. Under 49 U.S.C. § 30120, a manufacturer that must remedy a safety defect has to do so without charge when the vehicle is presented for the remedy. If a manufacturer chooses to repair and does not adequately repair the vehicle within a reasonable time, the statute provides for replacement or refund, and a failure to repair within 60 days after presentation is treated as prima facie evidence of an unreasonable delay. Exceptions apply, and this does not mean every owner automatically gets a replacement or refund after 60 days.
What If I Already Paid to Fix a Ram ProMaster Steering Problem?
Keep your repair invoice, dealer diagnosis, parts receipts, VIN, mileage, dates and any photos of corrosion or water in the connector. Ask Chrysler or an authorized Ram dealer whether your repair qualifies for reimbursement under the recall. Prior repairs are not automatically covered.
Can Ram ProMaster Owners Get Money From Recall 26V621?
The announced remedy is a free repair. As of October 8, 2026, no class action settlement, claim deadline or cash payment program for this recall has been announced. A recall and a lawsuit are separate things.
If a steering failure caused a crash, injury or property damage, you may have legal claims under your state’s law, depending on the facts. Preserve the van if possible, plus accident reports, photos, medical records and repair records, and consider speaking with a licensed attorney in your state.
Is There a Ram ProMaster Steering Class Action Lawsuit?
None has been announced in connection with NHTSA 26V621. Be wary of websites that suggest the recall itself means a settlement check is available.
