A $6,438,578.20 settlement is open for claims from people affected by the American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA) data breach. It resolves claims against Sonic Healthcare U.S.A., Aurora Diagnostics LLC, Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Inc. (CPL) and Austin Pathology Associates. AMCA was the billing and collection company whose systems were breached. This is not a settlement with AMCA itself.
Eligible people can claim up to $5,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses or an Alternative Cash Payment currently estimated at $50. They can also elect up to two years of medical and healthcare information monitoring through CyEx Medical Shield Pro. You must file a claim to receive benefits. The deadline is January 4, 2027. The settlement still needs final court approval.

What Happened in the AMCA Data Breach?
AMCA was a medical billing and debt collection company that handled accounts for healthcare providers and labs. Its systems were affected by a security incident between about August 1, 2018 and March 30, 2019. Personal information and/or protected health information of patients of AMCA’s clients may have been affected, and the exact information involved varies by person.
The cases against the labs that used AMCA are bundled in one multidistrict litigation in New Jersey, with separate settlements for separate defendants. The lawsuit alleges the defendants failed to adequately protect patient data. The settlement site does not say the labs did anything wrong, and a settlement is not a court finding of liability.
Is This the Same as the Labcorp Settlement?
No. Labcorp has its own separate AMCA settlement in the same litigation, a $35 million consumer settlement whose claim deadline was September 3, 2026. The umbrella AMCA website notes that more settlements with other defendants may follow. If your notice names a different lab than the four covered here, this settlement is not the one that applies to you. Use the settlement website and claim form that match your notice.
Who Qualifies?
The settlement class is defined by the notice you received. Based on the settlement materials, you may qualify if Clinical Pathology Laboratories or Austin Pathology Associates, or AMCA on their behalf, sent you notice that your information was involved or may have been involved in the AMCA security incident.
The settlement does not simply cover everyone whose information was somewhere in AMCA’s systems. The Long Form Notice and the executed Settlement Agreement, both on the settlement website’s documents page, contain the full class definition and any exclusions, and they control. If you received a notice, you have a Class Member ID, which the online claim form asks for. Not sure you are covered? Call Kroll at (833) 453-3715 or use the Contact Us form on the settlement website.

How Much Can You Get?
The $6.44 million fund pays class benefits, administration costs and court-approved attorneys’ fees and service awards. You can choose one cash option and also elect monitoring.
Option 1: Up to $5,000 for Documented Losses
You can claim up to $5,000 for out-of-pocket losses that are documented, unreimbursed, actually incurred and fairly traceable to the AMCA incident. Examples include losses from identity theft, medical fraud or other misuse of personal information; professional services related to identity theft; notary, fax, postage, copying, mileage and long-distance phone costs; and credit monitoring expenses.
The settlement also allows up to 10 hours of documented time at $25 per hour (up to $250) spent remedying fraud or identity theft.
$5,000 is a maximum, not a guarantee. Out-of-pocket claims are subject to pro rata increases or decreases depending on how many claims are filed.
Proof required: receipts or other documents showing the costs, plus an attestation that the losses are fairly traceable to the AMCA incident and not caused by another event. A document you create yourself, such as a handwritten receipt, is not enough on its own.
Option 2: Estimated $50 Alternative Cash Payment
If you do not have documented losses, you can choose the Alternative Cash Payment, currently estimated at $50 per valid claimant. No documentation is required. The actual amount depends on the net fund remaining after expenses and other benefits, so it may change. You cannot claim both cash options.
Medical Data Monitoring
Class members can elect up to two years of CyEx Medical Shield Pro medical and healthcare information monitoring. It is separate from the cash benefits. This is relevant because the incident involved protected health information. If your health data is ever misused, see our guide, What to Do If You’re a Victim of Medical Identity Theft?.
How to File an AMCA Settlement Claim
- Find your notice (postcard or email) and your Class Member ID.
- Open the online claim form and log in with the ID. Or download a paper form from the settlement website.
- Complete the sections in order: your information, benefit selection, healthcare information monitoring services, payment method, then the attestation and signature.
- Submit by Monday, January 4, 2027. Online claims must be submitted, and mailed claims postmarked, by that date.
- Questions, or no ID? Use the Contact Us form on the settlement website or call (833) 453-3715.
Mail paper claims to: American Medical Collection Agency, Inc. Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, Sonic Healthcare U.S.A., Aurora Diagnostics LLC, Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Inc., and Austin Pathology Associates Settlement, Attn: Claims, c/o Kroll Settlement Administration LLC, PO Box 5324, New York, NY 10150-5324.
Should You Opt Out or Object Before December 3, 2026?
Opt out. You get no benefits, but you keep any right to pursue your own case against the defendants over these claims, subject to their defenses, including statutes of limitations. Your written exclusion request must be postmarked by December 3, 2026 and mailed to the same Kroll address with “Attn: Exclusion Request.” You can hire your own lawyer at your own expense. See Class Action Lawyer, Role, Cost, Settlements, and How Class Action Lawsuits Work for what you give up and keep.
Object. If you stay in the settlement, you can tell the court why you dislike it, including the request for attorneys’ fees and expenses. Your objection and any notice that you plan to appear at the hearing must be received by December 3, 2026. The required contents and filing address are in the Long Form Notice. You cannot both opt out and object.
Do nothing. You receive no payment or monitoring and, unless you opt out, remain bound by the settlement and give up the right to sue the defendants over the claims it resolves.
Final Fairness Hearing
Judge Jamel K. Semper will hold the final fairness hearing on January 7, 2027, at 11:00 a.m. ET in Courtroom PO 03, Frank R. Lautenberg U.S.P.O. & Courthouse, 2 Federal Square, Newark, NJ 07102. The court will decide whether to approve the settlement and will consider the requested fees, expenses and service awards. The hearing date can change, so check the settlement website. The website’s FAQ has a section on whether you must attend; check it or call the administrator if you are unsure.
When Will Payments Go Out?
No payment date has been published. Benefits will be distributed only after final approval and after any appeals are resolved or the time to appeal has expired. Filing a claim by January 4 does not mean you will be paid right after that date.

Settlement Class Counsel will ask the court to approve attorneys’ fees and expenses of up to 34% of the $6,438,578.20 fund, which is about $2.19 million, plus $5,000 service awards for each class representative. These come out of the fund and are subject to court approval.
