$10M StubHub Deceptive Ticket Pricing Settlement, Did You Buy NFL Tickets in May 2025?

The Federal Trade Commission ordered StubHub Holdings, Inc. to pay $10 million in refunds after finding the company hid mandatory fees from customers during ticket purchases in May 2025. The FTC says StubHub broke a brand-new federal rule requiring all-in ticket prices to be shown upfront — and did so right as the NFL released its 2025 season schedule, one of the busiest ticket-buying moments of the year. If you bought tickets on StubHub between May 12 and May 14, 2025, you may receive a refund automatically — no claim form required.

Current Status: What Happens Next

  • The proposed settlement order was filed on April 9, 2026 in federal court in New York and is awaiting a judge’s signature to take full legal effect.
  • The FTC’s action also follows a Presidential Executive Order on Ticketing directing the FTC to ensure price transparency at all stages of the ticket-purchase process, including the secondary ticketing market.
  • This is the largest enforcement action taken under the FTC’s Fees Rule since the rule came into force — and it signals regulators are actively watching ticketing platforms.

What Did StubHub Actually Do Wrong?

The FTC’s Fees Rule went into effect on May 12, 2025, requiring that advertised ticket prices show fees and charges, and that when fees and charges are itemized, the total price must be shown as a single figure. StubHub failed to follow that rule on its very first day.

According to the FTC, StubHub failed to provide total ticket prices on the first three pricing displays on its website. On the initial two pricing displays, the advertised price in numerous instances did not include all mandatory fees and did not disclose the total price. On the third pricing display, StubHub listed multiple fees and charges but still did not disclose the total price.

The FTC says this wasn’t an oversight. The FTC’s complaint cites internal communications showing that StubHub executives understood the rule, weighed the competitive disadvantage of showing higher all-in prices against rivals who might not comply immediately, and made a calculated decision to continue the deceptive practice. The timing was not coincidental — StubHub chose to delay full compliance specifically around the NFL schedule release, one of its highest-traffic events of the year.

Who Is Eligible for a Refund?

This settlement works differently from a typical class action — you do not file a claim form. StubHub contacts eligible customers directly. Here is who qualifies:

  • You may qualify if you purchased tickets for a live event in the United States on StubHub between May 12 and May 14, 2025.
  • You may qualify if the total price of your tickets — including all mandatory fees — was not clearly shown on the first screen where you saw the ticket price.
  • You may qualify if StubHub still has your email address on file from the time of purchase.

There are two groups of eligible buyers:

  • Group 1 — Buyers where the all-in total price was not disclosed on the very first pricing screen they saw. This group receives a refund of the hidden fees they paid.
  • Group 2 — All other buyers who purchased tickets during the May 12–14, 2025 window, even if the fee disclosure issue affected them at a later checkout screen.

The order says StubHub must notify customers within 14 days, using the last known email address associated with the initial ticket purchase. If that address doesn’t work, the company is required to use any other address it might have for the customer. Customers can expect the refund to arrive in the original form of payment, or via PayPal if the first method fails.

How Much Money Will You Get Back?

The payment will reimburse customers for the fees they paid — such as fulfillment and service fees. If the amount owed is more than the total in the consumer fund, everyone will receive a proportion of the amount owed.

In plain terms: if you paid $30 in hidden service and fulfillment fees on a ticket purchase during those three days, you could get $30 back. If the total eligible refund amount across all buyers exceeds $10 million, each person receives a proportional share instead of the full fee amount.

You do not need to calculate anything or submit documentation. StubHub processes the refund on its own using your purchase record.

How the Refund Reaches You — Step by Step

Step 1 — StubHub identifies you as an eligible buyer using its own purchase records from May 12–14, 2025.

Step 2 — Within 14 days of the court order taking effect, StubHub sends a notification email to the address you used when purchasing the tickets.

Step 3 — Check your inbox — including your spam folder — for an email from StubHub about your refund.

Step 4 — Your refund goes back to your original payment method automatically. If that fails, StubHub sends it via PayPal.

Step 5 — StubHub must issue all refunds within 90 days of the date of the order.

Step 6 — If you believe you qualify but receive no email, contact StubHub customer support and reference FTC Case No. 1:26-cv-02924.

Estimated time required from you: None — this is an automatic refund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to file a claim or do anything to get my refund?

No. This is not a traditional class action settlement where you submit a claim form. StubHub is required by the court order to identify eligible buyers and send refund notifications automatically by email. If you bought tickets on StubHub between May 12–14, 2025, just watch your inbox.

Is this settlement legitimate?

Yes. The FTC announced the settlement on April 9, 2026, and the proposed order was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. This is a government enforcement action — not a third-party class action — making it one of the most direct consumer refund mechanisms available.

When will I receive my refund payment?

StubHub must complete all refund payments within 90 days of the court order. Since the order was filed on April 9, 2026, eligible customers should expect to receive refunds by approximately July 2026, assuming the judge signs the order without delay.

What if I missed the claim deadline?

There is no claim deadline in this settlement because there is no claim form. StubHub contacts you. If you think you qualify and hear nothing, reach out to StubHub directly and reference the FTC case number.

Will this refund affect my taxes?

The refund represents a return of fees you already paid — not new income — so it is generally not considered taxable. That said, tax treatment can vary by situation. Consult a tax professional if you are unsure how to report it.

What is the FTC’s Fees Rule and why does it matter?

The Fees Rule states that it is an unfair and deceptive practice for any business to offer, display, or advertise the price of a live-event ticket without clearly, conspicuously, and most prominently disclosing the total price. It means you have a legal right to see the full price — including every fee — before you make a purchasing decision.

Does this stop StubHub from hiding fees in the future?

The proposed order also prohibits StubHub from misrepresenting the total price of any good or service, any fee or charge including its nature and amount, the final payment amount for any transaction, and any other material fact related to refunds or cancellations. Going forward, StubHub must show all-in prices prominently at every step of checkout.

Has StubHub faced FTC action before?

Yes. In 2023, StubHub paid $550,000 to settle separate FTC allegations over related pricing practices. The April 2026 action involves a significantly larger penalty and carries permanent restrictions on how StubHub displays prices.
