What Did Mubi Actually Do Wrong?

Mubi is a global streaming service focused on independent and art-house films. A California subscriber named Cesar Cejudo filed a class action lawsuit against the company in 2025, claiming Mubi charged customers for subscription renewals without giving them clear, upfront notice that renewals would happen automatically.

The lawsuit alleges that Mubi violated two California consumer protection laws — the False Advertising Law and the Unfair Competition Law. Under California’s automatic renewal rules, companies must clearly disclose recurring charges before a customer signs up and must get the customer’s explicit agreement to those terms.

Mubi denies any wrongdoing. The company agreed to settle to avoid the cost and risk of going to trial. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California is overseeing the case, known as Cesar Cejudo v. MUBI, Inc., Case No. 5:25-CV-03652-BLF.

Do You Qualify to File a Claim?

You may qualify if you meet all of the following:

  • You lived in California when you signed up for a Mubi subscription.
  • You signed up for Mubi on or after April 1, 2021.
  • Mubi renewed your subscription at least once between April 1, 2021, and May 31, 2025.
  • You did not receive a full refund from Mubi for those renewal charges.

You do not qualify if you are a Mubi employee or officer, a government entity, an attorney involved in the case, or if you choose to opt out of the settlement.

How Much Money Can You Get?

Every class member who submits a valid, timely claim receives an equal share of what remains in the $1,600,000 settlement fund after the following deductions:

  • Attorneys’ fees: Up to $400,000 (25% of the fund)
  • Incentive award to the lead plaintiff: Up to $5,000
  • Notice and administration costs: TBD

The exact amount per person depends on how many people file valid claims. The more people who file, the smaller each individual share becomes. No proof of purchase is required to file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a lawyer to file a claim?

No. The court has already appointed Class Counsel — Dovel & Luner, LLP — to represent all class members at no cost to you. You can file your claim directly at mubisettlement.com in about five minutes without hiring anyone.

Is this settlement legitimate?

Yes. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has preliminarily approved this settlement. The official claim site, mubisettlement.com, is run by Kroll Settlement Administration, one of the most widely used court-approved settlement administrators in the country.

When will I receive my payment?

The court holds a Final Approval Hearing on July 16, 2026. If the court approves and no one appeals, Kroll will send payments roughly 30 days after the case is fully resolved. Appeals, if filed, can delay payment by a year or more.

What if I missed the claim deadline?

The deadline is June 9, 2026. If you file after that date, the settlement administrator will likely reject your claim and you will not receive a payment. Missing the deadline also means you are still bound by the settlement and cannot sue Mubi separately over the same issue.

Will this settlement payment affect my taxes?

Settlement payments can be taxable depending on your situation. The IRS generally treats payments that compensate for lost money as taxable income. Consult a tax professional if you are unsure how this payment affects your return.

What if I don’t file a claim — do I still lose my right to sue?

Yes. If you do nothing, you remain part of the settlement class, you release your claims against Mubi for the auto-renewal practices at issue, and you receive no payment. To keep your right to sue independently, you must opt out by June 9, 2026.

Can I object to the settlement instead of opting out?

Yes. You can submit a written objection to the court by June 9, 2026. Objecting means you stay in the class and can still collect a payment — you are simply asking the court to reconsider or modify the deal. Opting out means you leave the class entirely and receive nothing.

What payment options are available for my settlement award?

You can choose from a prepaid Mastercard, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle (all sent electronically), or a physical check mailed to your address. You select your preferred method when you file your claim.
