$15M Generac PWRcell SnapRS Class Action Settlement, Solar System Owners Can Claim Cash for Fire Hazard Defect  Deadline May 18, 2026

The Generac PWRcell SnapRS settlement is a $15,000,000 class action resolution where eligible current owners and primary users of Generac PWRcell solar power systems purchased in the United States before January 9, 2026, can receive a pro-rata cash payment, reimbursement for out-of-pocket repair costs, and additional compensation for lost energy production — by filing a claim before May 18, 2026

The lawsuit alleges Generac’s SnapRS units are defective and dangerous to consumers and their homes, becoming overactive and overheating in ways that can cause charring and home fires, as well as shutting down entire solar panels for prolonged periods and causing a complete loss of energy production. Generac Holdings Inc. and Generac Power Systems, Inc. deny all allegations. The settlement is pending final court approval at a hearing on July 15, 2026.

What Is the Generac SnapRS Lawsuit About? In re: Generac Solar Power Systems, MDL No. 3078

Generac makes the PWRcell clean home energy system, which stores energy from solar panels in lithium-ion batteries. Each PWRcell system contains SnapRS connector components — a SnapRS connector is designed to be installed between each solar panel to meet U.S. National Electric Code rapid shutdown requirements, which protect firefighters and solar workers from electrical hazards. Generac states SnapRS can reduce solar system output to 75 volts in under 10 seconds.

The problem is that the SnapRS devices don’t work as advertised. SnapRS shutoff components manufactured before May 2022 have a reported 50% failure rate. Instead of protecting the system, the protectors often malfunction and start rapidly cycling off and on, causing the components to overheat, bubble, burn, separate, melt, char, combust, and/or explode. At least three home fires have already been attributed to the defective SnapRS. Generac has acknowledged that the SnapRS has a failure rate of 50% but has failed to issue a recall.

Many others have lost valuable energy generation opportunities when the SnapRS malfunctions, causing the PWRcell to display a “PVRSS Lockout” error code. Following pressure from consumers and contractors, Generac came out with a new version of the PWRcell shutoff component in May 2022 — the SnapRS 802 — that finally fixed the defect according to the lawsuit.

Multiple lawsuits were filed across the country, consolidated by the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, and centralized before Judge Lynn Adelman in the Eastern District of Wisconsin as MDL No. 3078. Generac did not disclose the defects to consumers and has not recalled the units. Generac has not informed the public of the ongoing safety risks its systems pose and the systems do not meet the representations Generac made about their quality, function, and safety. The claims include breach of warranty, breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, unjust enrichment, and violations of state consumer protection laws. Who Qualifies for the Generac PWRcell SnapRS Settlement?

Eligibility is defined broadly — if you own or live in a home powered by a Generac PWRcell system purchased before January 9, 2026, you are almost certainly a class member.

You may qualify if you are:

  • A current Owner — any person or entity that holds contractual ownership rights to a PWRcell System purchased in the U.S. before January 9, 2026
  • A Primary User — a homeowner or other occupant of the property where a PWRcell System is installed who is financially responsible for the electric service at that address
  • Note: The Owner and Primary User can be different people — and both can file separate claims for the same system, though they each receive 50% of the System Claim payment in that case

You do NOT qualify if:

  • You are Generac Holdings Inc. or Generac Power Systems, Inc., their subsidiaries, officers, directors, or employees
  • You are the presiding judge or their immediate family
  • You are Class Counsel or Defense Counsel
  • You submitted a valid opt-out request

If you received a settlement notice with a Claim ID, you are pre-qualified for the base System Claim and can use the simplified Easy Pay process. If you did not receive a notice but believe you own a qualifying system, contact the administrator at 1-855-707-4196 or visit generacsnapsettlement.com.

How Much Can You Get from the Generac SnapRS Settlement?

The $15,000,000 Settlement Fund is divided into three separate claim types. You can file for all three that apply to your situation.

Claim Type 1 — System Claim (All Class Members)

Every eligible class member who files a valid claim receives a pro-rata cash payment from the fund. Your payment amount scales with the number of SnapRS devices in your system — which equals the number of solar panels connected to your system. The more panels, the larger your share. The final per-device dollar amount depends on total valid claims filed — if fewer people file than expected, your payment goes up; if more file, it goes down.

To count your SnapRS devices: check your purchase agreement, look at your system’s inverter display, or simply count your solar panels. Each panel equals one SnapRS device. Note that the number of PV Links is not the same as the number of SnapRS devices.

Claim Type 2 — Out-of-Pocket Expenses (Documentation Required)

If you paid for SnapRS-related repairs, system removal, or other expenses connected to the defect before January 9, 2026, you can claim reimbursement. Eligible expenses include repair invoices, removal costs, inspections, recertification, and permitting fees. You must provide pre-settlement receipts or comparable third-party documentation. Self-prepared notes alone are not sufficient — they must support other documentation, not stand alone.

Claim Type 3 — Lost Energy Production (Two Options)

If your PWRcell system produced significantly less electricity than it should have due to SnapRS failures, you have two paths:

  • $150 Flat Award: Attest under penalty of perjury that your system produced less than 75% of expected output for two or more months. No documentation required beyond your sworn statement.
  • Full Loss Claim: Submit documentation of your actual power loss — utility bills or PWRview App monthly generation reports — and claim reimbursement for the actual economic value of what you lost. If documentation is deemed insufficient, you receive a maximum of $100.

Non-Monetary Benefits (Systems Purchased Before May 2022)

All class members who purchased their systems before May 2022 receive warranty changes as a non-monetary benefit. All class members — regardless of purchase date — receive educational materials about SnapRS-related error codes. Details on the specific warranty changes are in the Settlement Agreement available at generacsnapsettlement.com.

Step-by-Step: How to File Your Generac SnapRS Settlement Claim

Step 1 — Locate your Claim ID. Check the email or postcard notice you received from the Settlement Administrator. If you received a Claim ID, you are pre-qualified for the Easy Pay System Claim.

Step 2 — Count your SnapRS devices. This equals your number of solar panels. Find this on your purchase agreement, inverter display, or by counting panels.

Step 3 — Choose your filing path.

  • Easy Pay (Pre-Qualified, System Claim only): If you have a Claim ID and are not claiming out-of-pocket expenses or production loss, go to generacsnapsettlement.eagclaims.com, enter your Claim ID, confirm your Owner or Primary User status, enter your SnapRS device count, and select your payment method.
  • Full Claim (All others, or anyone adding out-of-pocket or production loss claims): Complete the full Claim Form, provide your system serial number (found on your inverter or in the PWRview app), and attach all documentation.

Step 4 — Select your payment method. The claim form offers PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or a paper check mailed to your address.

Step 5 — Submit before May 18, 2026. Online submissions must be completed by May 18, 2026. Mailed claims must be postmarked by May 18, 2026, and sent to: Generac PWRcell Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 1628, Baton Rouge, LA 70821.

Step 6 — Update the administrator if your contact information changes. Call 1-855-707-4196 or write to the mailing address if your email or address changes after you file.

Estimated time to complete: 5–10 minutes for the Easy Pay System Claim; 20–30 minutes for the full claim with documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a lawyer to file a Generac settlement claim?

No. The online claim portal at generacsnapsettlement.eagclaims.com is straightforward, and the Easy Pay option for pre-qualified claimants takes about five minutes. Court-appointed Class Counsel from five law firms — including Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein and Kershaw Talley Barlow — represent all class members at no cost to you. You may also hire your own attorney at your own expense.

Is this settlement legitimate?

Yes. This is a court-authorized MDL settlement in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, MDL No. 3078, overseen by the Honorable Lynn Adelman. The official settlement website is generacsnapsettlement.com. Do not contact Generac Customer Service about the settlement — all questions should go to the Settlement Administrator at 1-855-707-4196 or [email protected].

I didn’t get a notice. Can I still file?

Yes. If you own or are the primary user of a qualifying PWRcell system purchased before January 9, 2026, you are a class member even without a notice. You will need to complete the full claim form (not the Easy Pay option) and provide your system serial number, purchase date, and proof of ownership or use. Contact the administrator at 1-855-707-4196 to confirm your eligibility.

How do I find my system’s serial number?

Your PWRcell system serial number is displayed on the inverter unit itself or accessible through the Generac PWRview mobile app. It is also typically included in your original purchase documentation.

When will I get my payment?

TBD — payments are distributed after the court grants final approval at the July 15, 2026 hearing and after any appeals are resolved. For complex product liability MDL settlements, this can take several months beyond the hearing date.

My SnapRS caused a house fire — does this settlement cover fire damage?

The settlement covers out-of-pocket expenses connected to SnapRS-related problems, but fire damage to a home raises separate legal questions beyond the scope of a class settlement. If you experienced a fire or significant property damage you believe was caused by SnapRS, consult an independent product liability attorney about whether individual claims may be more appropriate than participating in this settlement. If you opt out of the class, you retain the right to sue independently.

What is a “PVRSS Lockout” error?

A PVRSS Lockout is an error code that appears on your Generac PWRcell inverter display when the system detects a SnapRS failure and shuts down the affected string of solar panels. Many homeowners have lost valuable energy generation when the SnapRS malfunctions and the PWRcell displays this error. If you have seen this error, you may have grounds for a lost energy production claim in addition to your base system claim.

Will my settlement payment be taxable?

Cash payments from product defect settlements may be treated differently depending on whether they compensate for property damage, economic loss, or diminished value. Consult a tax professional for guidance specific to your situation and the type of claim you filed.
