Class Action Filed Against MedStar Health Over Former Rheumatologist’s Dr. James Curtis Roberson II Alleged Patient Misconduct
April 22, 2026
A class action lawsuit filed this week names MedStar Health and former rheumatologist Dr. James Curtis Roberson II as defendants, alleging that Roberson engaged in sexual misconduct with patients at MedStar facilities in Maryland and Virginia.
The lawsuit alleges that Roberson engaged in misconduct during visits, including repeated examinations without clinical indication, full-body contact during visits, and inappropriate touching outside accepted medical standards. More than 100 potential plaintiffs across Maryland and Virginia are involved, and the complaint seeks damages in excess of $5 million.
MedStar Health told reporters it fired Roberson after investigating complaints and reported the information to the Maryland State Board of Physicians. According to documents posted to the Maryland State Board of Physicians website, Roberson’s medical license was permanently revoked in February 2026.

In a statement, MedStar said: “Dr. Roberson’s inappropriate personal conduct violated the foundational trust placed in him by his patients, by MedStar Health, and by the laws and ethics of his profession. We will never tolerate inappropriate behavior by our providers, and we will always act quickly to address any allegations of misconduct brought to our attention.”
MedStar has stated that when it first learned of a patient’s concerns about Roberson’s behavior in early October 2024, it suspended him immediately.
The lawsuit was filed by the firm Brockstedt Mandalas Federico. Attorney Philip Federico said in a statement: “Historically, MedStar Health has prioritized patient safety. We look forward to pursuing this case on behalf of the patients who say they were affected.”
The case is in its earliest stage. No court hearing dates, case number, or settlement have been announced.
