What Happened in the Pawn America Data Breach?

In September 2021, an unauthorized third party broke into Pawn America’s computer systems and accessed files containing sensitive customer data. The breach affected customers of Pawn America Minnesota LLC, Payday America Inc., and PAL Card Minnesota LLC — all part of the same company group.

The exposed information included names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, government identification numbers, dates of birth, and financial account information. This type of data exposure puts people at risk of identity theft, fraudulent account openings, and financial losses that can take years to resolve.

Plaintiffs filed the first lawsuit on November 23, 2021, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Three separate cases were later consolidated into one under the caption In re Pawn America Consumer Data Breach Litigation, Case No. 21-cv-02554. Pawn America denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of a trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a lawyer to file a claim?

No. You do not need a lawyer to file a claim in this settlement. Visit the official settlement website, enter your Claim ID and PIN, select your payout option, and submit. The entire process takes roughly 5–10 minutes.

Is this settlement legitimate?

Yes. The case is filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota under Case No. 21-cv-02554. You can verify all details at the official settlement website: www.pawnamericasettlement.com. The settlement administrator is Verita Global, a court-approved claims administrator.

When will I receive my payment?

Payments go out approximately 90 days after the court grants final approval of the settlement. The final approval hearing is scheduled for September 9, 2026, so payments could begin in late 2026 if there are no appeals.

What if I missed the claim deadline?

The deadline is July 6, 2026. If you miss it, you will not receive a payment. However, if you do not opt out by June 5, 2026, you remain bound by the settlement terms and give up your right to sue Pawn America separately over this breach.

Will this settlement payment affect my taxes?

Settlement payments tied to out-of-pocket losses are often treated differently than general cash payments for tax purposes. Consult a tax professional to understand how any payment you receive may affect your specific situation.

What if I did not receive a breach notification letter?

You may still qualify if your information was exposed. Contact the settlement administrator directly at 1-888-266-7074 or email [email protected] to check whether you are in the class.

What types of documents do I need for a documented loss claim?

Acceptable documents include bank or credit card statements showing fraudulent charges, receipts for credit monitoring services, invoices for professional fees, correspondence with your bank or credit union about fraud, and a police report if you filed one for identity theft. You do not need all of these — just whatever evidence connects your expense to this specific breach.

What does it mean to opt out of the settlement?

Opting out means you leave the class and give up your right to a settlement payment. In exchange, you keep the right to file your own individual lawsuit against Pawn America over the breach. Most people benefit from staying in the class. To opt out, you must submit a written request postmarked by June 5, 2026.
