Natera $9.5M Genetic Screening Test Billing Settlement, Who Qualifies and How to Claim by May 3, 2027
If Natera, Inc. billed you more than $249 or $349 for a Panorama prenatal screening test or a Horizon carrier screening test, you may be able to claim money from a proposed $9.5 million class action settlement. The case, Calcaterra v. Natera, Inc., claims Natera misled patients about what they would pay out of pocket. Natera denies any wrongdoing.
You must file a claim. The claim deadline is May 3, 2027. The opt-out and objection deadline comes much sooner, on December 28, 2026.
Important: The settlement is not final yet. The court granted preliminary approval on September 2, 2026, and the Final Approval Hearing is set for March 2, 2027. The claim deadline falls after that hearing, so you can file now and do not need to wait.
This is a different case from the $8.25 million Natera prenatal testing settlement about test accuracy. This article covers only the billing settlement.

What Is the Natera Billing Lawsuit About?
The lawsuit alleges that Natera represented that patients’ out-of-pocket cost for its tests would not exceed $249, but then billed some patients several hundred or even thousands of dollars. The plaintiffs say Natera’s conduct violated consumer protection laws and common law. The proposed class covers people across the United States.
Natera denies the allegations. According to the settlement FAQ, Natera says it is broadly in-network with most U.S. health plans, that the overwhelming majority of patients owe less than $249 or $349 depending on the test and plan, and that it gives cost and coverage information through brochures, its website, and a complimentary pre-test cost estimate service. The court has not decided who is right, and the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing.
The case has a long history. A patient first sued in November 2021. The federal court dismissed the case without prejudice in May 2023, the plaintiff refiled in California state court in July 2023, and after an additional plaintiff was added the case returned to federal court, where Rachel Calcaterra is the named plaintiff.
Not about test accuracy. This settlement concerns billing communications and out-of-pocket costs. It is not a finding that Panorama or Horizon tests are inaccurate or medically defective.
Is This the Same as the $8.25 Million Natera Prenatal Testing Settlement?
No. That was a separate case, In re Natera Prenatal Testing Litigation, about allegations that prenatal tests were marketed as more reliable than they were. Different allegations, different class, different terms. See our coverage of the Natera $8.25M prenatal screening settlement. If you are in both, your combined recovery cannot exceed what you paid out of pocket for your test.
Who Qualifies for the Natera Billing Settlement?
You may be in the settlement class if Natera performed a Panorama or Horizon test for you between July 10, 2019 and September 2, 2026, and Natera billed you more than the applicable amount:
- More than $249 for Panorama noninvasive prenatal testing without microdeletions
- More than $349 for Panorama noninvasive prenatal testing with microdeletions
- More than $349 for Horizon genetic carrier screening
The court preliminarily certified the class for settlement purposes on September 2, 2026. People who validly opt out are excluded.
Did you get a notice? Class members are being notified by email or postcard. Your notice contains the Class Member ID you need to file online. If you think you qualify but did not get a notice, or you are not sure whether you are included, contact the administrator at (833) 453-3593 or through the contact form on the official website.

How Much Can You Get From the Natera Settlement?
There is no single payment amount for everyone. The settlement fund is shared among class members who file valid claims, and how much you can receive depends on whether you can show what you paid.
- With proof of payment: Claimants whose payment above the threshold is documented receive a share of the fund after court-approved costs. Your payment cannot exceed what you actually paid out of pocket, and the amount depends on how many valid claims are filed.
- Without proof of payment: You can still claim, but your payment is capped. The settlement sets a maximum of $50 for claimants without proof.
Do not count on a particular figure. The exact allocation formula is in the Notice and Settlement Agreement on the official website, and the final amounts will not be known until claims are processed and the court approves the settlement.
Where the $9.5 Million Goes
The fund must cover payments to class members, attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses, a service award for the named plaintiff, and notice and administration costs. The court decides what fees, expenses, and service award to approve and can award less than what is requested. Class counsel are Wolf Popper LLP and Berman Tabacco. You are not charged for them. See the official FAQ for the fee request details.
Changes Natera Agreed to Make
Beyond money, Natera agreed to add disclosures. Patient invoices for the covered tests will direct patients to the back of the bill for its billing policy and payment options, and test requisition forms will describe Natera’s price transparency program and the information patients must provide to get cost information. These changes are part of the settlement and do not mean Natera admitted it did anything wrong.

The release does not cover personal injury claims or the claims in In re Natera Prenatal Testing Litigation. The Settlement Agreement controls, so read it before you decide.
Natera Settlement Final Approval Hearing
The court will hold the Final Approval Hearing on March 2, 2027, at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in the Northern District of California (Oakland). The judge will decide whether the settlement is fair, reasonable, and adequate, and will consider the requested fees, expenses, and service award. The date may change, so check the official website for updates.
When Will Natera Settlement Payments Be Sent?
There is no confirmed payment date. Payments depend on final approval, and the claim deadline of May 3, 2027 falls after the hearing. An appeal could delay payments further. Filing a claim does not mean a payment will arrive soon after the deadline.
